Algeria is a perfect place for desert power.
I am happy that the Algerian authorities are determined to develop renewable energy on an industrial scale, and to create local industries and job opportunities. Sonelgaz and Dii will join forces to accelerate the development of renewable energy and grid reinforcements for the improvement of the energy mix in Algeria and Europe.
The EU Commission for Energy has taken a leading position in defining concrete steps towards building a sustainable, low-carbon future.
Importing solar electricity from the deserts of North Africa is an effective way to supplement the power generated from local renewable sources in Europe. Thus, Desert power should become a major part of the EU Energy Roadmap 2050.
In a few years initial reference projects – hopefully also in Algeria - can become a reality. Only in close partnership we can master the challenges of the future with public and private support on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea – in order to create a win-win situation for Algeria and Europe with power from the deserts.
I am glad that Dii can count on the support of such strong and highly respected partners as Sonelgaz and the European Commission.
